This is a book by Cynthia L. Copeland, and provided to me by my OBGYN's office. Cute. Funny. Very accurate.
(They also gave me "What to Expect When You're Expecting" which was a life saver: figuratively, keeping me from losing my mind or calling the OBGYN every day, and litterally, helping me correctly diagnose a blood clot in my leg.)
Anyway, I wanted to comment on parts of this book as I was able to relate to it. This post got kind of long, so this will be the first in a series of "Diaper Diaries" posts.
"Well-Baby Checkup: A Typical Experience"
(Pg143) "As you are sitting in the reception area listening for your name, you hear your baby's name being called and are suddenly struck by the fact that she (I read he) is her own person with her own appointment and you are really just there to carry her from place to place."
I was startled to hear Liam's name called, now that you mention it! I had to stop myself when I wanted to respond, "He's only 3 weeks old...did you mean to say 'Katie'?" No they did not. He is an actual person. This is his doctor. Of course they meant to say "Liam." Still seems odd.
(Pg 147) "The doctor finally comes in and asks you all sorts of tricky questions. You are afraid that if you answer incorrectly, he will take the baby and give her to another mother who had better answers."
Liam's pediatrician asked me, "So tell me what you notice about him?" To which I responded, "I...uh...I'mmmm not sure...?" I had only known this child for 3 weeks. What could I notice about him, other than the fact that he is a short person who cries, eats, and poops a lot. He does not yet know how to talk, walk, or hold a job. He has no medical disorders that I can see, Doctor, so what you notice about him is probably more important. So what is the correct answer to that question?? "Nothing" cannot be correct, but that was all that came to mind!
(Pg 149) "Then he asks if you have any further questions and you say no...As you leave...you remember the 17 very important questions you meant to ask."
Mental note: ask if Liam's toe nails are supposed to grow. I have clipped his finger nails at least 8 times, but have not clipped his toe nails, not even once. And they look no longer than the day he was born. Normal?
UPDATE: Yes, his slow-growing toe nails are normal. He is also in the 50th percentile for head circumference and height. He is in the 90th percentile for weight!
